Birnbeck Regenetation - A Statement

Submitted on 18 May 2016

At the 'Regeneration of Birnbeck' meeting on 17 May Richard Griffin of the Birnback Regeneration Trust stated that North Somerset Council funded Clevedon Pier with £1million each year.

We have received the following statement from John Crockford-Hawley, Chairman of North Somerset Council:

"As you know Clevedon Pier is owned by NSC (an inherited asset). Two capital allocations were made in 2005 (£328,000) and 2012 (£657,601), both of which were contained in public reports.
There is NO ongoing subsidy from NSC but the Council does contribute £20,000 pa towards insurance costs. This might cease in 2017/18 once the new visitors' centre and restaurant are up and running.
NSC has made NO financial contribution to the recent works at Clevedon Pier. I believe these works have been funded through the HLF and Coastal Communities Fund as well as the pier's own fund-raising activities. A one-off contribution of £50,000 was allocated from the s106 Agreement at the adjacent hotel development.
Clevedon Pier is a charity so also benefits from discretionary relief on the Business Rates."
